Sclerosing Cholangitis: Introduction
Scarring and hardening (sclerosis) of bile duct tissues due to a bile duct inflammation (cholangitis). This hardening can damage and block the bile duct, reducing the flow of bile out of the liver. If the blockage is severe, bile backs up into the liver and causes liver damage. The condition progresses slowly and it may be many years or decades before liver failure finally occurs.
