Glossary for Sea wasp poisoning -- Chironex fleckeri

  • Bites, stings and other animal-related conditions: Medical conditions caused by animals, such as bites and stings.
  • Cardiac arrest: Stoppage of the heart, usually caused by heart attack
  • Death: The cessation of life
  • Nausea: The queasy feeling of nausea and often also vomiting.
  • Pain: A feeling of suffering, agony, distress caused by the stimulation of pain fibres in the nervous system
  • Paralysis: The loss of motor function due to dysfunction of the spinal cord
  • Poisoning, overdose or adverse reactions: Medical conditions related to poisons, drug overdosage, or drug adverse reactions.
  • Respiratory arrest: A term used to indicate cessation of breathing.
  • Respiratory paralysis: Respiratory paralysis occurs when the muscles associated with breathing become do weak to function properly. Breathing becomes difficulty and severe cases can result in death if breathing assistance is not delivered. The condition can result from such things as motor neuron disease, trauma and myopathy.
  • Shock: Severe condition from reduced blood circulation
  • Skin blistering: The occurrence of blistering on the skin
  • Slow heartbeat: Excessively slow heart beat (slow pulse) called "bradycardia"
  • Striped Blister Beetle poisoning: The striped blister beetle is native to many parts of America and Canada. Animals that accidentally eat the beetles can become quite ill and they can also cause symptoms in humans if accidentally ingested. The beetles contain toxic substances called cantharidin and pederin which can cause symptoms through skin or eye exposure as well as through ingestion.
  • Swelling symptoms: Symptoms causing swelling or enlargement.
  • Vomiting: Vomiting or retching symptoms.
