Definitions of Somatostatinoma:
A rare somatostatin-secreting tumor of pancreatic delta cells associated with diabetes mellitus or abnormal glucose tolerance. Usually malignant, this neoplasm secretes large amounts of somatostatin, which may result in a syndrome characterized by diarrhea, steatorrhea, weight loss, and gastric hyposecretion. Sixty percent are found in the pancreas and 40% in the duodenum or jejunum. The peak incidence occurs between 40 and 60 years of age; women are affected more than men by 2:1. Also known as somatostatinoma. --2004
- (Source - Diseases Database)
Somatostatinoma is listed as a "rare disease" by the Office of
Rare Diseases (ORD) of the National Institutes of Health
(NIH). This means that Somatostatinoma, or a subtype of Somatostatinoma,
affects less than 200,000 people in the US population.
