Sparganosis: Introduction

Infection with a particular parastitic tapeworm larva (spargana). The tapeworm migrates to tissues under the skin where it forms nodules which are itchy, inflamed and painful. The conditions can be serious if the tapeworm migrates to the eye or brain however this is rare. Infection occurs by eating infected foods or contaminated drinking water.
