Symptoms of Stress: Introduction

The immediate symptoms of stress include increased heart rate (tachycardia), high blood pressure (hypertension) and dilated pupils. Short-term acute stress can actually help a person to react more quickly, think more clearly, and be more attentive and productive.

However, ongoing stress or chronic stress can overwhelm the body and result in poor concentration, fatigue, poor memory, and difficulty sleeping. This can result in psychological problems, such as anxiety, depression, anger, poor self esteem, and hostility.

The effects stress can also lead to physical symptoms, such as headaches, insomnia, muscle pain, indigestion, abdominal pain, and muscle tightness.

The ongoing effect of chronic stress on the blood vessels of the body can damage them and contribute to the risk of developing serious diseases, such as cardiovascular disease and heart disease. This can result in such symptoms as chest pain, angina, and shortness of breath. Rarely, extremely intense stress can result in a serious condition called stress-induced cardiomyopathy.
