Salt craving is an intensive or excessive desire to ingest salt or foods that are salty. Salt craving can be a symptom of a variety of mild to serious disorders, diseases or conditions.
Salt craving can result from a relatively mild condition that is easy to resolve, such as mild dehydration. Salt craving can also occur during pregnancy. Salt craving can also accompany a serious condition, disease or disorder, such as Addison's disease and other adrenal disorders, and moderate to severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalance.
Depending on the cause, salt craving can be short-term and disappear quickly, such as when salt craving occurs during mild dehydration due to sweating that is treated by drinking oral rehydration fluids, such as Gatorade.
Salt craving often occurs in conjunction with other symptoms, which vary depending on the underlying disease, disorder or condition. Other common symptoms include dizziness, dry mouth and thirst. Complications of a salt craving that leads to a high intake of salt include fluid overload and hypertension. The underlying disorder, disease or condition can also cause complications. For more details about symptoms and complications, see symptoms of salt craving.
Diagnosing a root cause of a salt craving begins with taking a thorough personal and family medical history, including symptoms, and completing a physical examination. Diagnostic blood tests include a chemistry panel, which measures the levels of important electrolytes in the blood, including sodium (salt) and can evaluate if dehydration and electrolyte imbalance are present. An urinanalysis can also help to determine dehydration. A blood or urine pregnancy test may also be done.
If Addison's disease or other adrenal disorders or adrenal diseases are suspected, additional blood and urine tests can be done to measure the health of the kidneys and the levels of corticosteroid hormones in the body. Antibody and aldosterone testing may also be done.
Making a diagnosis may also include performing a variety of other tests, depending on the suspected cause of a salt craving.
A diagnosis of the disease, disorder or condition that underlies a salt craving can easily be delayed or missed because salt craving may be mild or not believed to be a symptom of a serious condition. For information on misdiagnosis, refer to misdiagnosis of salt craving.
