Diagnostic tests for Sensitive hearing:

Various tests are used in the diagnosis of Sensitive hearing. Some of these are listed below :

  • Physical examination
    • Temperature. If elevated may suggest meningitis, middle ear infection, herpes zoster (shingles) or rabies
    • Central nervous system examination looking for signs of 7th nerve palsy which may cause overly sensitive hearing if the damage to the seventh cranial nerve is within the petrous temporal bone. Causes include Bell's palsy, head trauma (causing a fracture of the petrous temporal bone), middle ear infection or herpes zoster infection (shingles)
    • Look for signs of Bell's palsy (7th nerve palsy of unknown cause) - e.g. unable to wrinkle forehead or close eye forcefully on affected side, unable to whistle or blow out cheeks.
    • Complete examination of the ears, nose and throat looking for rupture of ear drum, ear discharge or evidence of middle ear infection which may cause injury to the seventh cranial nerve and over sensitive hearing
    • If 7th nerve palsy, examine for a blister-like rash on the pharynx or external ear canal that would suggest herpes zoster (shingles) infection of the nerve
  • Swab of ear discharge, if present for microscopy and culture
  • more tests...»
