Rib cage (organ): The rib cage consists of 12 pairs of ribs, costal cartilages, sternum and the thoracic vertebrae. The rib cage is gives structure to the thorax and surrounds and protects the vital organs of the chest, such as the heart, lungs and great vessels. The rib cage also provides attachments for muscles and contains bone marrow in the ribs.

The rib cage forms a portion of the axial skeleton and is also a part of the respiratory system. During respiration, the contractions of the muscular diaphragm and intercostal muscles lifts the rib cage up and out, expanding and drawing air into the lungs. Conditions that can afflict the rib cage include fracture, flail chest, infection, osteomyelitis, arthritis, bifurcated ribs, pectus excavatum, costochondritis and pectus carinatum.
