Causes of Bloody stool

Introduction: Bloody stool

There are a wide variety of underlying diseases, conditions and disorders that can cause blood in the stool.

Some causes of having blood in the stool, such as perforated peptic ulcer or esophageal varices can quickly lead to serious, even life-threatening complications, such as anemia, uncontrolled hemorrhage, and shock.

Blood in the stool may also be a symptom of other serious diseases, conditions and disorders, such as colorectal cancer, diverticula and inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Blood in the stool can also be due to food poisoning, rectal prolapse, colorectal cancer, rectal abscesses, intestinal infections, peptic ulcer and intestinal polyps.

Less serious causes of blood in the stool include hemorrhoids, constipation, anal sex, straining at the stool or anal fissures.

Because any sign of blood in the stool is abnormal and potentially serious, even very small amounts of blood should be reported to and evaluated by a licensed health care provider, such as a physician or a nurse practitioner. A specialist in gastrointestinal medicine, such as a gastroenterologist or a proctologist, may need to be consulted to make a definite diagnosis.
