During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques to assess the symptom: Bone pain. These will include a physical examination and possibly diagnostic tests. (Note: A physical exam is always done, diagnostic tests may or may not be performed depending on the suspected condition) Your doctor will ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to openly share any pertinent information to help your doctor make an accurate diagnosis.

Why: to establish if acute or chronic.
Why: may suggest fracture. If the injury was minimal may suggest osteoporosis or pathological fracture due to bone tumor or bone metastases.

Why: may suggest osteomyelitis, infective discitis.
Why: may indicate Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis, bone tumors, osteomyelitis or fracture.

Why: e.g. bone pain, usually back ache, symptoms of anemia, recurrent infections, symptoms of renal failure.
Why: e.g. deformed bone, warm skin over affected area, enlargement of skull, persistent headaches.
