Questions Your Doctor May Ask - and Why!

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques to assess the symptom: Bone pain. These will include a physical examination and possibly diagnostic tests. (Note: A physical exam is always done, diagnostic tests may or may not be performed depending on the suspected condition) Your doctor will ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to openly share any pertinent information to help your doctor make an accurate diagnosis.

It is also very important to bring an up-to-date list of all of your all medical conditions, medications including dosages, and names of numbers of any specialist you see.

How long have you noticed the bone pain?
Why: to establish if acute or chronic.
Is the bone pain localized or generalized?
If localized , where is the bone pain?
Is there a history of trauma or injury?
Why: may suggest fracture. If the injury was minimal may suggest osteoporosis or pathological fracture due to bone tumor or bone metastases.
Is the bone pain present day at night?
Why: may suggest more serious cause such as bone tumor, bone metastases, leukemia, Paget's.
Fever
Why: may suggest osteomyelitis, infective discitis.
Is there a limitation of motion of the joints?
Why: may indicate Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis, bone tumors, osteomyelitis or fracture.
Symptoms of bone metastases?
Why: e.g. malaise, fever, weight loss, pathological fractures.
Symptoms of multiple myeloma?
Why: e.g. bone pain, usually back ache, symptoms of anemia, recurrent infections, symptoms of renal failure.
Symptoms of Paget's disease?
Why: e.g. deformed bone, warm skin over affected area, enlargement of skull, persistent headaches.
