Causes of Constipation

Introduction: Constipation

There are a wide variety of underlying diseases, conditions and disorders that can cause constipation.

Some causes of having constipation, such as intestinal obstruction can quickly lead to serious, even life-threatening complications, such as peritonitis, shock and death if not treated rapidly. Other serious causes of constipation include colorectal cancer, colon cancer, diverticulitis, ileus and certain types of spinal cord injury.

Constipation may also be a symptom of other diseases, conditions and disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulosis, hemorrhoids and anal fistula.

Other causes of constipation include pregnancy and not having a bowel movement promptly when there is an urge. Not getting enough exercise or sufficient fiber and water in the diet, stress and travel can also lead to constipation.

The overuse of laxatives can lead to laxative dependency, in which a person loses the ability to have a normal bowel movement without a laxative. Constipation can also occur as a side effect of certain medications, such as narcotics.

Because constipation is abnormal and potentially serious, ongoing constipation should be reported to and evaluated by a licensed health care provider, such as a physician or a nurse practitioner. A specialist in gastrointestinal medicine, such as a gastroenterologist or a proctologist, may need to be consulted to make a definite diagnosis in some cases.
