Cough Treatments

Cough: Treatments Inroduction

Treatment plans for a cough are individualized depending on the underlying cause, the presence of coexisting diseases, the age and medical history of the patient, and other factors. Treatment generally involves a multifaceted plan that addresses the cause, minimizes the discomfort of a cough, decreases the risk of developing serious complications, and helps a person to breathe and rest comfortably.

When a cough is caused by a viral infection, such as influenza or an upper respiratory infection, the treatment is rest, increased fluids, using a vaporizer, and may include cough suppressant or cough expectorant medication. When a cough is caused by a bacterial infection, such as in bacterial pneumonia, antibiotics are prescribed as well.

Other treatments that may help a cough include decongestants, corticosteroids, and medications that are breathed in via inhalers and nebulizers, depending on the specific underlying cause. Quitting smoking can improve a smoker's cough, and using air purifiers and avoiding allergens can prevent or improve cough due to allergies or asthma.

Serious causes of a cough, such as pneumonia, congestive heart failure or airway obstruction may require hospitalization, intensive care and life support measures, including mechanical ventilation.
