Causes of Irritability

Introduction: Irritability

Mental health disorders are common causes of irritability. These include delusional disorders, psychosis, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Alcohol intoxication can cause irritability as can alcoholism, drug addiction and the use of certain drugs. These drugs include amphetamines, diet drugs, marijuana, crack, cocaine, methamphetamine, LSD, sedatives, narcotics, hypnotics and barbiturates.

Other causes of irritability include neurological diseases and neurological disorder which directly affect the brain and nervous system. These include stroke, Alzheimer's disease, dementia, transient ischemic attack and head injuries or head trauma, such as concussion. Other neurological diseases that can cause irritability include brain tumor, subdural hematoma, meningitis, brain abscess, hydrocephalus and encephalopathy.

Irritability can be the result of a wide variety of other conditions, diseases or disorders that indirectly affect the functioning of the brain and nervous system. These include chronic illness, hyperthyroidism, hypoxia, intellectual decline, fever, premenstrual syndrome, perimenopause, headache, moderate to severe chronic pain and menopause.
