Menstrual irregularities Treatments
Menstrual irregularities: Treatments Inroduction
Although menstrual irregularities may not be curable in all cases, there are treatments available to minimize symptoms, allowing many women to lead a normal, active life and to conceive a healthy pregnancy.
Treatment for menstrual irregularities consists of a multi-faceted plan that is individualized to the type of irregularity, the underlying cause, the severity and the presence of complications.
Women with no or minimal symptoms of menstrual irregularities may not need any treatment other than regular medical care to keep an eye on the development of the underlying disorder. This might occur with such conditions as an irregular period due to puberty or perimenopause.
Mild to moderate menstrual discomfort and pain may be relieved by use of over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen, warm baths and compresses, and regular exercise.
Some underlying conditions, such as endometriosis may be treated with hormone or hormone-like drugs, such as birth control pills or injections, which suppress abnormal endometrial tissue from growing and causing menstrual irregularities. Other drugs are used to create a temporary state of menopause, which can stop the growth of endometrial tissue. Heavy menstrual periods and painful menstrual periods may also be treated with hormones.
Reducing excessive weight may also be helpful in treating some conditions that underlie menstrual irregularities.
Surgical procedures may also be performed for some women with certain underlying causes of menstrual irregularities, such as severe endometriosis or uterine cancer.
