Mouth ulcers Treatments
Mouth ulcers: Treatments Inroduction
Treatment of mouth ulcers begins with prevention. This includes seeking regular dental care (twice yearly) and maintaining good oral hygiene, such as brushing the teeth at least twice a day and flossing once a day.
Treatment plans for mouth ulcers are individualized based on the underlying cause, the presence of coexisting diseases, the age and medical history of the patient, and other factors. Treatment generally involves a multifaceted plan that addresses the cause, minimizes the appearance and pain of mouth ulcers, and decreases the risk of developing serious complications, such as periodontitis.
Treatment for most mouth ulcers includes avoiding spicy, hot or acidic foods, which can increase pain and irritation of the mouth ulcers.
When mouth ulcers are caused by gum disease, gingivitis, periodontal disease, and/or a bacterial infection of the mouth, treatment generally needs to be performed by a dentist and/or periodontist (a specialist in periodontal disease). Treatment may include regular dental cleaning, antiseptic mouth rinses, antibiotics and brushing and flossing.
Treatment also includes repairing or replacing broken or missing teeth and addressing dental cavities. Treatment may also include scaling, root planning and antibiotics. In some severe cases, surgery may also be needed.
Treatment of oral thrush includes a topical antifungal medication or an oral anti-fungal pill and good oral hygiene. Treatment of cold sores caused by herpes simplex includes antiviral medication and the use of ice packs. Canker sores often need no treatment, although a pain relieving gel or lozenges may be recommended until the canker sore has healed.
Treatment of vitamin deficiencies that can cause mouth ulcers, such as vitamin B12 deficiency and zinc deficiency, includes vitamin supplementation.
Treatment of mouth lacerations includes good oral hygiene to prevent infection and stitching or suturing the laceration if needed.
Treatment of oral cancer and malignant tumors of the tongue and tumors of the mouth includes surgical removal of the tumor, radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy.
