  • Physical examination
    • Examine the mouth and pharynx for local causes of pain with swallowing - e.g. ulcers in the mouth, glossitis (inflammation of the tongue), tonsillitis, cancer of the larynx or oral cancer.
    • Feel the lymph nodes in the neck for enlargement which may suggest esophageal cancer or tonsillitis
  • Blood tests
    • Full blood count and ESR (may detect anemia due to esophageal cancer, Plummer-Vinson syndrome or oesophagitis
  • Radiological investigations
    • Barium swallow may display features of cancer of the esophagus, esophageal diverticulum, achalasia, hiatus hernia and oesophagitis
  • CT Scan of the chest, if suspect a chest mass
  • Esophagoscopy - to obtain more definitive diagnosis and to obtain a biopsy, especially in the case of esophageal cancer and infections.
  • Esophageal manometry (measuring the pressure within the esophagus) - may detect achalasia or diffuse esophageal spasm.
  • Ambulatory pH monitoring - can diagnose reflux oesophagitis.
