Glossary for Thyroid cancer

  • Adenopathy: Enlarged lymph nodes which may be caused by local or generalised infection, inflammatory conditions, malignancy or more unusual disorders.
  • Cancer: Abnormal overgrowth of body cells.
  • Difficulty speaking: Where one has a problem with communicating through speech
  • Endocrine system cancer: Cancer that affects any gland in the endocrine system
  • Endocrine system conditions: Medical conditions affecting the endocrine systems, such as the related hormones or glands.
  • Exercise: The use of the human muscles to improve ones health
  • Goiter: Swollen neck thyroid gland
  • Graves Disease: is an autoimmune disease characterized by hyperthyroidism due to circulating autoantibodies. Thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulins (TSIs) bind to and activate thyrotropin receptors, causing the thyroid gland to grow and the thyroid follicles to increase synthesis of thyroid hormone.
  • Hoarse: Hoarseness or loss of voice
  • Hodgkin's Disease: A form of cancer that affects the lymphatic system.
  • Hyperthyroidism: Too much thyroid hormone production.
  • Lung cancer: Lung cancer is a disease of uncontrolled cell growth in tissues of the lung. This growth may lead to metastasis, which is the invasion of adjacent tissue and infiltration beyond the lungs. Most lung tumors are malignant.
  • Multiple endocrine neoplasia: A group of conditions that is characterised by the hyperplasia and hyperfunction of two or more glands of the endocrine system
  • Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2: Rare inherited disease causing tumors in multiple glands
  • Neck Cancer: Any cancer that occurs in the neck
  • Neck lump: Lump in the neck area
  • Neck swelling: Swelling in or around the neck
  • PTEN Hamartoma Tumor Syndrome: PTEN Hamartoma Tumor Syndrome is a group of conditions caused by a mutation in the PTEN gene. The primary characteristic of the condition is the development of multiple hamartomas (tumor-like growth) in virtually any part of the body. The growths are generally not cancerous but patients often have an increased risk of developing various cancers. Specific conditions covered by this term are Cowden syndrome, BAnnayan-Riley-Ruvalcaba Syndrome and Proteus syndrome.
  • Subacute Thyroiditis: A self-limiting, virally induced inflammation of the thyroid characterised by a febrile illness and swelling of the thyroid, with subsequent damage to the thyroid tissue causing leakage of thyroid hormones into the circulation
  • Tetany: Sensation changes and muscle symptoms from low blood calcium
  • Thyroid cancer: Cancer of the thyroid gland.
  • Thyroid cancer, anaplastic: A thyroid gland cancer that is quite aggressive and metastasizes to other parts of the body.
  • Thyroid disorders: Any disorder of the thyroid gland.
  • Thyroid symptoms: Symptoms affecting the thyroid gland
  • Thyroiditis: Thyroid gland inflammation
