Glossary for Tinea capitis

  • Alopecia: Various types of hair loss or balding
  • Conditions involving a pathogen: Medical conditions involving some type of pathogen, such as a virus or bacteria.
  • Dandruff: White flaking and dryness of the scalp.
  • Fungal infections: Any condition caused by fungus.
  • Hair loss: Loss or thinning of head or body hair
  • Head Conditions: Conditions that affect the head
  • Kerion celsi: A parasitic fungal skin infection that tends to occur mainly on the back of the neck, scalp or beard. It is caused by animal fungi. The condition resolves itself in a matter of weeks but hair loss in the affected area may be permanent.
  • Pruritus: The sensation of itch
  • Tinea: A general term for various fungal skin afflictions; often incorrectly called ringworm.
