Glossary for Tongue Conditions

  • Aphthous Ulcer: A rare condition characterized by recurring periods of painful inflamed mouth ulcers.
  • Bleeding symptoms: Any type of bleeding symptoms.
  • Dysphagia: Dysphagia refers to difficulty in swallowing.
  • Dysplasia: Disordered growth in epithelium, typified by a loss in uniformity and normal architecture of the cells.
  • Gingivostomatitis: Mouth infection typically from first exposure to cold sores and subsequent viral HSV-1 infection.
  • Glossitis: Inflammation of the tongue
  • Head Conditions: Conditions that affect the head
  • Lichen planus: Skin rash
  • Loss of taste: Losing the sense of taste
  • Mouth conditions: Any condition that affects the mouth
  • Oral thrush: Candida fungal infection of the mouth.
  • Secondary syphilis: A condition which is characterized by fever, multiform skin eruptions, iritis, alopecia, mucous patches and severe pain in the head and joints
  • Sore throat: Discomfort in the throat or with swallowing
  • Throat lump: Lump in the mucus membrane lining of the throat.
  • Throat pain: The occurrence of pain which is located in the throat
  • Throat ulcer: Ulcers in the mucus membrane lining of the throat.
  • Tongue Cancer: The majority of tongue cancers are squamous cell carcinomas. These arise from the lining that covers the muscles of the tongue
