Glossary for Toxic polyneuropathy -- Arsenic

  • Abnormal sensations: altered sensations due to involvement of the posterior column
  • Chemical-related conditions: Medical conditions related to chemicals and toxin exposures.
  • Nervous system conditions: Diseases affecting the nerves and the nervous system.
  • Neuropathy: Peripheral neuropathy is the term for damage to nerves of the peripheral nervous system, which may be caused either by diseases of the nerve or from the side-effects of systemic illness.
  • Numbness: Loss of feeling or sensation
  • Poisoning, overdose or adverse reactions: Medical conditions related to poisons, drug overdosage, or drug adverse reactions.
  • Tingling: Tingling, prickling, or pins-and-needles sensations
  • Toxic polyneuropathy -- Thallium: Exposure to Thalliumcan cause neuropathy as Thallium is toxic to the peripheral nervous system. This toxin causes mostly sensory or sensorimotor polyneuropathy (which affects sensation) with little or no weakness involved. Symptoms usually start in the outermost parts of the body such as the fingers and toes and moves towards the centre of the body. Due to the fact that any of a large number of toxins or conditions can cause neuropathies, it is very difficult to diagnose the exact cause.
