Glossary for Trisomy 18 Syndrome

  • Apnea: Cessation of breathing. Apnea can be caused by neurological diseases, strangulation, drugs and airway obstruction.
  • Congestive Heart Failure: Inadequate pumping and decline of heart function common in the elderly.
  • Ear symptoms: Symptoms affecting the ear or hearing
  • Edwards Syndrome: A rare inherited genetic disorder where a portion of chromosome 18 is duplicated. Most affected individuals die during the fetal stage and surviving infants have serious defects and tend to live for only a short while.
  • Genetic Disease: Any disease that is handed down to oneself through the chromosomes of ones parents
  • Infant Death: The death of an infant
  • Jaw symptoms: Symptoms affecting the jaw
  • Lung symptoms: Symptoms affecting one or both lungs.
  • Mental retardation: A very rare syndrome characterized mainly by mental retardation, hypogonadism, diabetes and facial and skull abnormalities.
  • Miscarriage: Loss of fetus without human interference
  • Psychomotor retardation: Psychomotor retardation refers to a slowing of physical movement and speech and activity caused by a mental health or emotional condition, such as depression.
