The word "tumor" actually refers to any type of lump or swelling in the body. Although common parlance is to use the word "tumor" in relation to cancer, cancer is only one type of tumor (i.e. a malignant tumor), and other types include benign tumors, cysts, abscess, etc. The word "neoplasm" is often used as the medical term for any cell overgrowth, including benign neoplasm (non-cancerous) and malignant neoplasm (cancerous). Definitions of Tumor:

An abnormal tissue growth resulted from uncontrolled cell proliferation. Benign neoplastic cells resemble normal cells without exhibiting significant cytologic atypia, while malignant ones exhibit overt signs such as dysplastic features, atypical mitotic figures, necrosis, nuclear pleomorphism, and anaplasia. Representative examples of benign neoplasms include papillomas, cystadenomas, and lipomas; malignant neoplasms include carcinomas, sarcomas, lymphomas, and leukemias. -- 2004 - (Source - Diseases Database)
