Type I Hypersensitivity: Introduction

Type I Hypersensitivity: Type I hypersensitivity is an exaggerated response by the body's immune system to an allergen which results in some sort of adverse effect on the body. Allergens usually in the form of proteins such as pollen, foods, house dust mite and cat hair. This form of hypersensitivity results in an immediate response by the immune system following exposure. Symptoms of Type I Hypersensitivity

Treatments for Type I Hypersensitivity

  • There is no cure. Treatment is aimed at managing symptoms: avoiding allergen, antihistamines, mast cell stabilizers, steroids, cyclosporine and immunotherapy
  • Treatment of Type 1 hypersensitivity is dependant upon the type and severity of allergic symptoms. Treatments for Type 1 hypersensitivity include:
    • Allergen avoidance and minimisation of exposure - including dietary management in food allergies, minimisation of dust mites with strategies in the home environment.
    • Antihistamines - Useful for allergic rhinitis and some allergy mediated skin conditions. Not helpful in asthma except for mild seasonal asthma where allergy may be a precipitant.
    • Nasal sprays - including topical steroids and antiinflammatories used for allergic rhinitis
