Paracentesis: A paracentesis is the removal of peritoneal fluid from the abdominal cavity through needle aspiration; the fluid is examined chemically and microscopically to classify the fluid as transudate or exudate and help diagnose its origin. This test is also performed therapeutically to relieve abdominal pressure.
