PET scan of the head and neck: A PET (positron emission tomography) scan of the head and neck is medical imaging following intravenous injection of radioactive glucose (sugar); glucose is uniformly metabolized by normal cells, whereas diseased cells acquire the glucose more readily. The increase in radioactivity is detected by a PET scanner and generates a picture, called a tomogram that shows the diseased area.
