Sputum fungal smear

Sputum fungal smear: A sputum fungal smear is a test to identify infectious fungi in a patient's sputum sample; sputum is a secretion from the lungs. A very small amount is placed on a glass slide and treated with potassium hydroxide (KOH), which destroys non-fungal cells and reveals any fungi under microscopic examination.
