The symptoms of vaginitis result from the inflammation of the moist, sensitive mucosa of the vagina. Symptoms vary in character and intensity depending on the cause of the vaginitis and individual factors.
Symptoms of a non-infectious vaginitis can include vaginal and genital itching, burning and unusual vaginal discharge.
Some women with a vaginitis caused by bacterial vaginosis may have no symptoms. Other women may experience an abnormal vaginal discharge that is thin and white that may have a fishy odor. Symptoms of a vaginitis caused by a yeast infection include severe itching and a thick white vaginal discharge that has the consistency of cottage cheese.
Symptoms of a vaginitis cause by trichomoniasis includes vaginal itching, burning with urination, and burning of the vaginal and genital area. Vaginitis cause by trichomoniasis and chlamydia genital herpes may produce no symptoms at all. Symptoms of a vaginitis caused by genital herpes may include pain and itching in the genital area and outbreaks of the development of blisters in the vagina.
Complications of vaginitis caused by sexually transmitted diseases, such as trichomoniasis and chlamydia genital herpes, can be serious.
