Symptoms of Vasculitis
Symptoms of Vasculitis: Introduction
The types and severity of symptoms of vasculitis vary greatly depending on the underling disorder and the blood vessels affected. Any blood vessel in the body, including small to large arteries and veins, can become inflamed and result in symptoms. Manifestations can appear in many areas of the body and run the gamut from mild to severe, and some complications can be serious, even life-threatening.
General symptoms of vasculitis can include fever, fatigue, weight loss, and loss of appetite.
Disorders that can cause vasculitis include Behcet's syndrome, which can cause inflammation of blood vessels of nearly all sizes and types. Wegener's granulomatosis affects the sinuses, nose, ears, kidneys, lungs, and trachea. Temporal arteritis affects the temporal artery that is located in the temple area of the head. Polyarteritis nodosa, affects the small and medium arteries of the body and can be fatal if not treated promptly. Takayasu's arteritis affects large blood vessels, especially the aorta, the largest artery of the body.
Various forms of arteritis lead to thickening of the arteries, which reduces the amount of oxygen-rich blood they can carry to tissues and organs. This can result in a heart attack. Other serious complications include the development of aneurysms in the lung, which can rupture and lead to uncontrolled bleeding or hemorrhage, shock, and death.
Vasculitis can also affect the brain resulting in headache, confusion, dizziness, personality changes, and stroke. Examples of other symptoms include painful sores that can develop and recur in the mouth, on the skin, in the gastrointestinal tract, and on the male and female genitals....more about Vasculitis »
