Von Willebrand disease, type 2: Introduction

Von Willebrand disease, type 2: A rare inherited blood coagulation disorder characterized by a defect in plasma protein called the von Willebrand factor which leads to bleeding problems. Type 2 is further subdivided into 4 subtypes, each with a different underlying genetic defect. The different subtypes have different methods of treatment so an correct diagnosis is important. Mild cases generally require no treatment. More severe cases may require medication such as desmopressin or humate p. The medication may need to be used prior to surgery or to treat bleeding problems. The medication can produce a variable response in patients and a patients response to the therapy should always be tested prior to using it
