Glossary for Yemenite deaf-blind hypopigmentation syndrome

  • Ear and Hearing conditions: Medical conditions affecting the ears or the hearing systems.
  • Eye and vision conditions: Medical conditions affecting the eyes or the vision systems.
  • Head Conditions: Conditions that affect the head
  • Hearing loss: A very rare condition described in two sisters. It is characterized by vision and hearing problems and incoordination.
  • Hyperpigmentation: Excess skin pigment or coloration
  • Iris symptoms: Symptoms affecting the iris of the eye
  • Microcornea: A syndrome characterized by large, short hands and feet and small corneas.
  • Nystagmus: Involuntary jerky eye movements
  • Sensorineural hearing loss: Hearing loss due to abnormal functioning or damage to the hearing nerve or the cochlea (inner ear) or the part of the brain that processes sound. The hearing problem may be present at birth or may be acquired through such things as aging, excessive noise or diseases such as meningitis.
