Glossary for Alcoholic liver disease

  • Abdominal conditions: Medical conditions affecting the abdominal region.
  • Abdominal pain: A condition which is characterized by the sensation of pain that is located in the abdomen
  • Alcoholic liver disease: Alcoholic liver disease is the major cause of liver disease in Western countries, (in Asian countries, viral hepatitis is the major cause). It arises from the excessive ingestion of alcohol.
  • Alcoholism: Alcoholism is the compulsive urge to drink alcohol despite knowing the negative impact on one's health.
  • Autoimmune Hepatitis: Liver inflammation caused due to autoimmune processes where the body's immune system attacks the liver.
  • Cholecystitis: Inflammation of the gallbladder which concentrates and stores bile. The condition may occur suddenly (acute) or persist over a longer period of time (chronic).
  • Cholelithiasis: Is the presence of gallstones in the gallbladder
  • Cholestyramine -- Teratogenic Agent: There is evidence to indicate that exposure to Cholestyramine (cholesterol-lowering drug) during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus. A teratogen is a substance that can cause birth defects. The likelihood and severity of defects may be affected by the level of exposure and the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at.
  • Chronic Hepatitis: Chronic hepatitis is defined as inflammatory disease of the liver lasting for more than six months.
  • Chronic Hepatitis B: Chronic form of HepB liver infection.
  • Chronic Hepatitis C: Chronic form of Hepatitis C viral liver infection.
  • Chronic digestive conditions: The chronic digestive conditions include Bowel Cancer, Coeliac Disease, Constipation, Diarrhoea, Diverticular disease, Flatulence, Haemorrhoids, Indigestion and heartburn, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn's Disease and ulcerative colitis), Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Lactose Intolerance, Ulcers
  • Chronic liver disease: Any form of chronic liver disease
  • Cirrhosis of the liver: Scarring of the liver from alcohol or other causes.
  • Death: The cessation of life
  • Digestive Diseases: Diseases that affect the digestive system
  • Fever: Elevation of the body temperature above the normal 37 degrees celsius
  • Hepatitis: Any type of liver inflammation or infection.
  • Jaundice: Bile or liver problem causing yellowness.
  • Liver cancer: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a primary malignancy of the liver.
  • Liver conditions: Any condition that affects the liver
  • Liver inflammation: The occurrence of inflammation located in the liver
  • Liver symptoms: Symptoms affecting the liver
  • Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH): A form of fatty liver where fat and fibrous tissue accumulate in the liver. Fatty liver is normally seen in alcoholic patients but in NASH syndrome, alcohol is not a factor. The condition may be generally asymptomatic or in some cases may lead to progressive scarring (cirrhosis) of the liver. The condition has a variable progression.
  • Viral Hepatitis: hepatitis describes inflammation of the liver. Hepatitis may be caused by alcohol, drugs, autoimmune diseases, metabolic diseases, and viruses. Viral infection accounts for more than half the cases of acute hepatitis.
