Hemoglobin consists of two main protein chains called alpha and beta. Alpha thalassemia silent carrier involves defects in one of the four genes required to make each ? protein chain. The patients will have no symptoms but if they have children with a partner who carries thalassemia genes then the condition may be passed on to the offspring.
