Causes of Andersen-Tawil syndrome

Andersen-Tawil syndrome type 1 is caused by mutations in the KCNJ2 gene. The KCNJ2 gene is required for normal skeletal and cardiac muscle function. In addition to periodic muscle paralysis and heart arrhythmia, Andersen-Tawil syndrome is characterized by congenital abnormalities that involve the head, face, and limbs. The gene defect in Andersen-Tawil syndrome type 2 is not known.
