Glossary for Besnier-Boeck-Schaumann disease

  • Acroosteolysis: A medical term for the slowly progressive destruction of the distal end of bones in the hands and feet. The condition may be inherited or may be acquired in occupations involving polyvinylcholoride plastic material.
  • Bronchiectasis: Chronic bronchiole dilation from secretions and blockages.
  • Cachexia: physical wasting with loss of weight and muscle mass caused by disease
  • Chest pain: Pain in the chest area.
  • Cough: The noise produced from the sudden expulsion of air from the lungs
  • Dacryoadenitis:
  • Dactylitis: Sausage shaped swelling of the fingers and the toes.
  • Erythema nodosum: Allergic skin condition usually on the legs
  • Fatigue: Excessive tiredness or weakness.
  • Fever: Elevation of the body temperature above the normal 37 degrees celsius
  • Flu-like conditions: Medical conditions similar to flu, or exhibition flu-like symptoms.
  • Hyperphosphataemia: An increased level of phosphate in the circulation above that which is considered normal
  • Joint pain: Pain affecting the joints
  • Mononeuritis multiplex: A rare neurological condition where nerve damage occurs at more than one site. Nerve damage can result from conditions such as diabetes mellitus, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and blood vessel diseases.
  • Myocarditis: Inflammation of the myocardium (muscle walls of the heart)
  • Myositis: One of the underlying causes for muscle weakness/myopathy.
  • Nephrocalcinosis: A condition characterized by calcium salt deposits in the kidneys which may affect it's ability to function. The condition refers to a generally increased level of calcium in the kidneys rather than actual localized deposits such as occurs in kidney stones. It may be caused by such things as high blood calcium levels and tuberculosis. The condition often goes unnoticed until kidney or urinary tract stones form.
  • Neuromyelitis Optica: A demyelinating disorder associated with transverse myelopathy and optic neuritis
  • Optic neuritis: Optic nerve inflammation
  • Osteoporosis: Bone thinning and weakening from bone calcium depletion.
  • Parotid gland enlargement: Parotid gland enlargement refers to swelling or puffiness of the parotid gland.
  • Pericarditis: Inflammation of the membrane surrounding the heart
  • Pleural effusion: Fluid in the pleural spaces.
  • Pneumothorax: Air in the pleural spaces around the lungs.
  • Proteinuria: Protein in the urine
  • Restrictive cardiomyopathy: A condition which is characterized by restriction to the function of the walls of the heart
  • Sarcoidosis: Rare autoimmune disease usually affecting the lungs.
  • Sinusitis: Sinusitis is an inflammation of the paranasal sinuses.
  • Tracheal Stenosis: Narrowing and hardening of the trachea.
  • Uveitis: A condition which is characterised by the inflammation of the uvea of the eye
  • Weight loss: Loss of body weight.
