Bloody sputum generally occurs in conjunction with a cough. Other symptoms that accompany bloody sputum vary depending on the underlying cause. Common symptoms include fever, shortness of breath, flu-like symptoms, labored breathing and chest pain. Other coexisting symptoms may include weight loss, fatigue, weakness, strider, wheezing, paleness and blueness of the skin (cyanosis).
Complications of underlying causes of a bloody sputum vary widely depending on the specific disease, disorder, or condition, and can be serious and life threatening. For example, bloody sputum can be due to pneumonia or a collapsed lung (hemopneumothorax). Complications can include low oxygen levels or hypoxia, high carbon dioxide levels or hypercapnia, respiratory failure (respiratory acidosis) and death.
Bloody sputum can be short-lived and disappear quickly, such as when it occurs with coughing after briefly inhaling smoke. Bloody sputum can also be chronic and ongoing over a longer period of time, such as when it is due to long-term smoking or lung cancer.
Because a bloody sputum can be a symptom of a serious or life-threatening disease, condition or disorder, it should be reported to a physician or other licensed health care provider....more about Bloody Sputum »
