Symptoms of Breathing difficulty

Symptoms of Breathing difficulty: Introduction

Breathing difficulty can occur along with a decreased number of breathes, below about eight breathes per minute for an adult. This is called hypopnea and can be a symptom of a very serious condition, including impending respiratory arrest.

Breathing difficulty combined with rapid breathing, more that about 16 breaths per minute for an adult, is called tachypnea. Tachypnea can be a symptom of a serious or life-threatening respiratory condition. These include pneumothorax, pneumonia acute bronchitis, bronchiolitis, asthma, COPD, pulmonary embolism and pulmonary edema.

Symptoms that accompany breathing difficulty vary depending on the underlying cause. Common symptoms include pain, anxiety, fever, shortness of breath, flu-like symptoms, snoring and chest pain. Other coexisting symptoms may include very low blood pressure or hypotension, fatigue, weakness, strider, wheezing, paleness, blueness of the skin (cyanosis).

Complications of breathing difficulty include low oxygen levels or hypoxia, high carbon dioxide levels or hypercapnia, respiratory failure (respiratory acidosis) and death.

Complications of underlying causes of breathing difficulty vary widely depending on the specific disease, disorder, or condition, and can be serious and life threatening. For example, breathing difficulty can be due to pulmonary embolism or pulmonary edema. Breathing difficulty can also be due to an airway obstruction that causes choking.

Because breathing difficulty can be a symptom of a serious or life-threatening disease, condition or disorder, it should immediately be evaluated by a physician or other licensed health care provider....more about Breathing difficulty »
