Misdiagnosis of Chemical poisoning

Misdiagnosis of Chemical poisoning

A diagnosis of chemical poisoning may be delayed because some symptoms can be vague and may initially be attributed to another less serious condition. For example, headache is a typical symptom of carbon monoxide poisoning but may be overlooked because it is easy to assume it to be due to other factors, such as stress.

In addition, some symptoms of some types of chemical poisoning do not appear until after extended periods of exposure, such as memory problems and other neurological problems due to chronic lead poisoning.

Pinpointing a diagnosis can also be difficult because there often is no single test to diagnose a specific chemical poisoning. Often, a certain chemical substance is suspected, based on taking a medical history and evidence found on the person or in the surrounding environment. An example is finding an empty bottle of household cleaner next to a toddler who has the smell of the cleaner on his breath.

A thorough medical evaluation and tests are then done to identify and monitor for the type symptoms and complications that a particular chemical typically causes to the body. The American Association of Poison Control Centers is generally contacted to assist with the diagnosis of chemical poisoning and make the best treatment plan based on symptoms, test results, and circumstantial evidence....more about Chemical poisoning »
