Glossary for Cockayne syndrome

  • Aging: The medical conditions from getting older.
  • Ataxia: It is a neurological sign and symptom consisting of gross lack of co-ordination of muscle movements.
  • Congenital conditions: Any condition that you are born with such as birth defects or genetic diseases.
  • Failure To Thrive: Slow growth or inadequate weight gain of an infant or child.
  • Head Conditions: Conditions that affect the head
  • Mental problems: Symptoms affecting judgement, thought or intelligence.
  • Mental retardation conditions: Medical conditions related to or causing mental retardation.
  • Microcephaly: Small head circumference
  • Musculoskeletal conditions: Medical conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system of bones, muscles and related structures.
  • Nervous system conditions: Diseases affecting the nerves and the nervous system.
  • Peripheral neuropathy: Peripheral neuropathy is the term for damage to nerves of the peripheral nervous system, which may be caused either by diseases of the nerve or from the side-effects of systemic illness.
  • Photosensitivity: Skin over-sensitivity to light
  • Premature aging: Where the aging processes of the body occur earlier than normal.

  • Schofer beetz bohl syndrome: A rare syndrome characterized mainly by brain calcification, mental retardation, short stature, diabetes insipidus and unusual facial appearance.
  • Sensorineural hearing loss: Hearing loss due to abnormal functioning or damage to the hearing nerve or the cochlea (inner ear) or the part of the brain that processes sound. The hearing problem may be present at birth or may be acquired through such things as aging, excessive noise or diseases such as meningitis.
  • Skin conditions: Any condition that affects the skin
  • Small head: The occurrence of a head which is smaller than normal
  • Thinness: Underweight and thin
  • Unsteady gait: A condition which is characterized by a poorly balanced gait
