Symptoms of Conjunctivitis

Symptoms of Conjunctivitis: Introduction

Symptoms of conjunctivitis include reddened or a pinkish appearance of the eyes, especially the conjunctiva. The conjunctiva is a thin, transparent membrane that lines and protects the whites of the eyes and the eyelids.

The affected eye or eyes can also feel gritty, and there is generally a discharge that builds up overnight to form a crust. Bacterial conjunctivitis tends to produce a thick, yellow discharge of pus from the affected eye. The eye discharge from a viral conjunctivitis is generally clear and more watery. Viral conjunctivitis may also lead to a sore throat and swollen glands (lymph glands) near the ears.

In all types of conjunctivitis, there also may be a general discomfort in the affected eye and a sensitivity to light (photosensitivity).

Conjunctivitis caused by an allergic reaction (allergic conjunctivitis) can also produce an eye discharge, as well as puffy itchy eyes, and a runny nose.

A form of conjunctivitis that occurs in newborn babies is called neonatal ophthalmia. Neonatal ophthalmia is a serious condition and can result in blindness in the infant if not treated promptly.

Other complications include the spread of the bacterial infection or viral infection that has caused conjunctivitis beyond the conjunctiva. Symptoms can include increased swelling, redness, pain in the eyes or eyelids and fever....more about Conjunctivitis »
