The sensation of dizziness can be experienced and described in many ways. These include feeling lightheaded, faint, woozy, weak, spacey or unsteady. Some people, especially older people, may describe dizziness as "having a spell". Other people may experience a sensation of having to "pass out" or faint. Dizziness can also be severe and cause a sensation of spinning, which may be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. This type of dizziness is called vertigo Vertigo can be severe enough to be disabling in that a person cannot move or get up from a lying position.

Dizziness can be short-lived and disappear quickly, such as when it occurs due to hyperventilation or standing up too quickly. Dizziness can also occur periodically in episodes, such as when it is due to Meniere's disease. Dizziness can also be chronic and ongoing over a longer period of time, such as when it is due to cardiovascular disease.

Complications of dizziness include fainting, also called syncope or a loss of consciousness, and injury due to falling when fainting.
