Glossary for Facial erythema

  • Angioedema: Severe and dangerous form of hives with swelling
  • Cellulitis: Inflammation of skin or subcutaneous tissues.
  • Contact dermatitis: Skin reaction to an irritant
  • Dandruff: White flaking and dryness of the scalp.
  • Dermatomyositis: A muscle disease characterized by chronic muscle inflammation resulting in progressive muscle weakness and a characteristic rash.
  • Erysipelas: A severe streptococcal bacterial infection where infection spreads from the skin to tissue underneath. The face and extremities are the usual sites affected.
  • Erysipeloid: A dermatitis or cellulitis of the hand and fingers
  • Impetigo: Contagious skin rash from bacteria
  • Lupus: Autoimmune disease with numerous effects on various organs and linings.
  • Necrotizing fasciitis: A severe, progressive skin infection which causes progressive destruction of skin and underlying tissue. It is caused by certain bacteria and has a high mortality rate.
  • Rosacea: Inflammatory rash affecting cheeks, nose, forehead, chin
  • Shingles: Infectious viral infection occuring years after chickenpox infection.
  • Tinea: A general term for various fungal skin afflictions; often incorrectly called ringworm.
