Symptoms of Jaw conditions: Introduction
Symptoms of jaw conditions vary greatly in severity and nature. The nature of symptoms depends on the specific disease or disorder, the presence of complications, and other factors. Some people with certain jaw conditions, such as jawbone cancer and periodontal disease may have no symptoms in early stages of the disease.
Symptoms of jaw conditions commonly include jaw pain and difficulty chewing.
Symptoms of dental conditions, such as impacted wisdom teeth, periodontal disease, poorly fitting dentures and tooth abscess, can include mouth lesions, bad breath, bleeding gums, loose teeth, fever, crooked teeth, and swollen and inflamed gums. Complications of these dental conditions can include the loss of teeth and jawbone, facial deformity, and difficulty chewing and eating that may lead to malnutrition.
Symptoms of jaw clenching and bruxism can include jaw pain and headaches. Complications include chipped teeth or ground down teeth. Symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorders can also include jaw pain, earache, clicking of the jaw, and headache.
Symptoms of jaw fracture, jaw dislocation, and cleft palate include deformity of the jaw, difficulty chewing, and jaw pain.
Symptoms of jawbone cancer include swollen lymph glands in the neck, jaw pain, and a pins and needles sensation in the jaw. Complications of advanced jawbone cancer can include the spread of cancer cells through the lymph nodes and blood to other parts of the body where the cancer cells can form another cancerous tumor.
