Treatments for Joint Pain
Treatments for Joint Pain:
Treatment plans for joint pain are individualized depending on the underlying cause, the presence of coexisting diseases, the age and medical history of the patient, and other factors. Treatment generally involves a multifaceted plan that addresses the cause, minimizes the discomfort of joint pain, decreases the risk of developing serious complications, and helps a person to live a normal active life.
A common cause of joint pain, osteoarthritis, is often treated using a combination of medications, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) and corticosteroids. Treatment also includes regular medical care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, exercise, hot and cold therapy, and possibly surgery.
Rheumatoid arthritis is treated with physical therapy, periods of rest, medications, and in some cases surgery. Orthopedic splints, heat and cold therapies and electrical stimulation treatments may also be helpful. Medications commonly used to treat rheumatoid arthritis include disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) and corticosteroids.
In some cases joint pain from sports injuries may be prevented by the use of appropriate protective equipment and by proper training techniques, warming up and stretching.
Joint pain due to an injury is generally treated with rest and elevation of the affected joint. Cold therapy and anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) are also used. Treatment may include a compression bandage, splint and/or application of a cast and crutches in some cases.
Other causes of joint pain may require similar plans and additional treatments, such as oral or intravenous antibiotics, if an infection is present or chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy for such causes as leukemia and bone cancer.
