Glossary for Microphthalmia syndromic, type 10

  • Blindness: The inability to see out of the eyes
  • Eye and vision conditions: Medical conditions affecting the eyes or the vision systems.
  • Genetic Disease: Any disease that is handed down to oneself through the chromosomes of ones parents
  • Head Conditions: Conditions that affect the head
  • Microphthalmia -- brain atrophy: A rare syndrome characterized by small eyes and degeneration of brain tissue which causes various abnormalities such as mental retardation. Usually the infant is relatively normal for a number of months after birth followed by rapid loss of previous acquired skills due to degeneration of the white matter of the brain.
  • Seizures: A rare syndrome characterized by mental retardation, seizures and high levels of hydroxylysine in the urine.
  • Small eye: Small eye is a condition in which an eye is unusually small.
  • Small head: The occurrence of a head which is smaller than normal
  • Spasticity: Continuous contraction or stiffness of muscles.
