Glossary for Myelopathy

  • Anterior spinal artery syndrome: Neurological symptoms caused by the blockage of the anterior spinal artery. The blockage may be caused by such things as trauma, cancer, thrombosis and arterial disease. Symptoms are determined by the exact location of the blockage.
  • Back conditions: A group of conditions that affect the back
  • Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis: A form of degenerative arthritis characterized by calcification on the sides of the spine vertebrae as well as inflammation and calcification of tendons where they attach to bone which often results in bone spurs.
  • Encephalitis: Dangerous infection of the brain
  • Epilepsy: Brain condition causing seizures or spasms.
  • Granulomatous Angiitis of the Central Nervous System: Inflammation of blood vessels in the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). The condition tends to recur.
  • HTLV: Virus associated with affecting the immune system.
  • HTLV-1: Virus affecting the immune system and associated with a particular leukemia/lymphoma.
  • HTLV-2: Human T-lymphotrophic virus 2
  • Imbalance: A inability to adequately balance on two feet with consideration to age
  • Muscle weakness: A condition which is characterized by an inability of the muscles to function at their full strenght
  • Myelitis: Spinal cord inflammation.
  • Nervous system conditions: Diseases affecting the nerves and the nervous system.
  • Numbness: Loss of feeling or sensation
  • Primary angiitis of the central nervous system: Inflammation of blood vessels that affect the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). There are three main types within this category: benign angiitis of the central nervous system (BACNS), granulomatous angiitis of the central nervous system (GACNS) and atypical primary angiitis of the central nervous system (atypical ACNS). Symptoms vary depending on which particular type is involved and which part of the central nervous system is involved.
  • Spinal Cord Disorders: Any condition that affects the spinal cord
  • Spondylosis: Spinal degeneration of the discs or spinal joints
  • Tropical Spastic Paraparesis: A form of spastic partial paralysis of the lower limbs which occurs in the tropics
