Free tyrosine assay system: A free tyrosine assay system is a laboratory method used to measure the amount of the amino acid tyrosine in the blood and urine. Phenylketonuria is an inherited disease in which phenylalanine cannot be converted to tyrosine; as such, a low level of tyrosine in newborns can indicate a defect in phenylalanine metabolism and possibly phenylketonuria.
