Summary Information: Gauze

Gauze: Gauze is a woven fiber of cotton and/or polyester and rayon that is used to absorb fluids from a draining wound and protect the wound from dirt and bacteria. The gauze may be kept moist with normal saline (sterile salt water) to provide a moist healing environment and may be treated with antibacterial or other medications as prescribed by the physician. Gauze is also used as a secondary dressing over other types of wound dressings (e.g. hydrogels).
