Surgical sponge counter: A surgical sponge counter is a system for tracking surgical sponges to prevent accidental retention of sponges in the body. The system includes a scanning device to detect a signalling tag implanted into each sponge by the manufacturer. The system may include a method for calculating the amount of liquid (e.g. blood) absorbed by the sponge during surgery.
