Urinary prosthesis for men

Summary Information: Urinary prosthesis for men

Urinary prosthesis for men: A urinary prosthesis for men is an implantable system used to control the urinary sphincter muscle that has been weakened by prostate surgery. An inflatable cuff is placed around the urethra, a pressure-regulating balloon is implanted in the abdominal cavity and a pump is implanted in the scrotum. The patient pumps fluid from the cuff to the balloon, which relaxes the urethra and allows the urine to flow. The fluid slowly empties from the balloon and refills the cuff, in effect closing off the urethra to prevent leakage.
