Glossary for Neonatal sepsis

  • Apnea: Cessation of breathing. Apnea can be caused by neurological diseases, strangulation, drugs and airway obstruction.
  • Blood conditions: Conditions that affect the blood
  • Conditions involving a pathogen: Medical conditions involving some type of pathogen, such as a virus or bacteria.
  • Cyanosis: Blueness or purple coloring of skin.
  • Hyperthermia: Hyperthermia is an increase in body temperature in the context of an unchanged thermoregulatory point in the brain.
  • Hypothermia: Low body temperature
  • Infant health conditions: Medical conditions typically affecting infants (including newborns and babies under one year old).
  • Isoimmune neonatal neutropenia: A rare disorder where the mother's body produces antibodies to fetal neutrophil antigens which can result in neonatal infections. Low neutrophil levels usually persist for 7 weeks.
  • Jaundice: Bile or liver problem causing yellowness.
  • Respiratory distress: A condition which is characterized by poor respiration that results in the body being under stress
  • Sepsis: The presence of pathological micro-organisms in the blood
  • Streptococcal Infections: Various "strep" bacterial infections.
